On Friday, June 14, Door Community Auditorium will kick off its season with a concert by Memphis multi-instrumentalist Eric Lewis and a plethora of his talented friends from Tennessee. Lewis, who travels the country playing swing, bluegrass, country, folk, and rock music, has packed houses throughout Door County with his startling skill on a variety of stringed instruments. At DCA, Lewis will be joined by Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame inductee Carolyn Martin, top-notch bassist David Martin, world-class Nashville drummer Tommy Wells, and Nashville musical powerhouse Rory Hoffman on harmonica, guitar, accordion, and a host of other instruments.
Eric Lewis, an accomplished guitar, steel guitar, dobro, and mandolin player, has built a devoted Door County fan following since he started playing here in the late 1990s, performing with other Door County favorites like Claudia Russell, James Kaplan, Doc Heide, and Fred Alley. He has performed extensively with American Folklore Theatre, and he was named “Best Male Musician” in Door County Magazine’s Best Of 2008 reader poll. At home in Memphis, Lewis is widely respected and has won the Premier String Player Award from the Memphis chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Lewis’ fellow performers (all of whom have appeared with Lewis at other Door County venues) are renowned musicians in their own right. Nashville-based Western-swing musicians Dave and Carolyn Martin (who appeared in concert at the White Gull Inn this winter) are known for their easy stage charisma as well as for their impeccable musicianship. Drummer Tommy Wells is a sought-after Nashville session drummer who has recorded with artists like Don McLean, Charley Pride, and Kathy Mattea. Rory Hoffman is a broadly diverse multi-instrumentalist who skillfully plays more than a dozen string, keyboard, and wind instruments.
The Eric Lewis and Friends concert is sponsored by Dr. Melissa Nelson and The Nelson Healing Center.
Lewis and his friends will take the stage at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14. Tickets for the concert range from $15 to $25. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
