Distinguished Lecture Series: Travel and the American Imagination - DCA iCal

Saturday, February 15 2014 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

On Saturday, February 15 at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Are We There Yet? Travel and the American Imagination,” presented by St. Norbert College assistant professor of English and director of American studies Deirdre Egan-Ryan.

Egan-Ryan will speak about the ways in which journeying through space is deeply embedded in our national identity. She will explore American appetite for travel and expanded horizons by looking to American literature, maps, advertisements, and art. Dr. Egan-Ryan’s scholarly work investigates the ways that our relationship to space and place influence our modern and American identities. She is fascinated especially by the ways that women writing during the first few decades of the 20th century found themselves negotiating gender identities through the shifting cultural spaces of American modernity: urban and rural, private and public.

Egan-Ryan’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Apple Creek Resort – Motel and Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
