YMCA To Kick Off Frozen Fun With Crossroads At Big Creek
4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
This family themed winter event will benefit the Y’s Annual Campaign and is sponsored by Ministry Door County Medical Center, The Y, Crossroads at Big Creek, EconoFoods and Whitetails Unlimited and will feature many of your children’s favorite frozen characters and fun events. Tickets are available at the YMCA.
Family friendly activities will include a snowshoe walk, a free chili/soup dinner, “Where in the Woods is Olaf” scavenger hunt, photo ops with your child’s favorite characters, sleigh rides by Mayberry Carriages of Door County, a snowman building station, crafts, games, hot cocoa, raffle prizes, smores and more! Snowshoes will be available for free or you can bring your own.
Because the event will be held at Crossroads and the Heritage Village at Big Creek, there will be an educational component inspired, aptly, by 2013 Disney animated film Frozen. The film opens with a depiction of Norwegian workmen out on a frozen lake, harvesting blocks of ice with special saws and tongs. That scene could have been set in Door County. The animation accurately portrays the ice harvest which took place every winter on the Bay of Sturgeon Bay during the late 1800s. Until about the 1890s, the ice trade was an important industry near Lake Michigan ports.
During the Frozen Winter Carnival, Mike Madden and his cohorts will be on the white Village Green to demonstrate how ice was cut. Kids might even get a chance to move ice like the ice cutters of yore.
Prior to February 25th, advanced registrations can be made at the Door County YMCA - $20 for individuals and $35 for families or on the day of the event $25 for individuals or $40 for families.
