Newport Wilderness Days

This event at Newport State Park was started many years ago as a way for the members of Newport Wilderness Society, the park’s friends group, to showcase this beautiful wilderness park. Volunteers led hikes on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, covering many areas of interest. This year’s programs are:
8:00 am Coffee on the Beach by Basecamp Coffee. What a great way to start your day with a hot cup of coffee on the beach. Meet at Lot 3.
9:00 am Wildflowers and Wild Edibles led by park naturalists. Learn to identify late blooming wildflowers and edible, nuts, berries and plants. Meet at Lot 3.
9:00 am Geology Hike Join geologist Jack Travis and learn about the fascinating and rich geologic history of the Door Peninsula. There will be moderate hiking and a chance to look for fossils along the lakeshore. Meet at Lot 3.
1:00 pm Open Door Bird Sanctuary of Jacksonport Raptor Program. General bird information as well as raptors will be discussed, narrowing down to hawks, falcons & owls. You will meet Aisling, the sanctuary’s resident Eurasian Eagle Owl and learn more about him. Meet at the Visitor’s Center.
2:00 pm Hotz Family History led by Steve Uglinica. Learn about the rich history of Ferdinand Hotz and his family. With Hotz owning most of the area now known as Newport State Park, his love of the land and foresight into conserving natural resources made it the place it is today. Meet at Europe Bay Town Park at the end of Europe Bay Road.
3:00 pm Insects of Newport Sate Park Join entomologist Dick Smythe and learn about the world of insects. Meet at the Visitor’s Center.
