 Newport Wilderness Days

Sunday August 31st

This event at Newport State Park was started many years ago as a way for the members of Newport Wilderness Society, the park’s friends group, to showcase this beautiful wilderness park. Volunteers led hikes on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, covering many areas of interest. This year’s programs are:

8:00 am Coffee on the Beach by Basecamp Coffee.  What a great way to start your day with a hot cup of coffee on the beach. Meet at Lot 3. 

9:00 am Wildflowers and Wild Edibles led by park naturalists. Learn to identify late blooming wildflowers and edible, nuts, berries and plants. Meet at Lot 3.

9:00 am Geology Hike Join geologist Jack Travis and learn about the fascinating and rich geologic history of the Door Peninsula. There will be moderate hiking and a chance to look for fossils along the lakeshore. Meet at Lot 3.

 

1:00 pm Open Door Bird Sanctuary of Jacksonport Raptor Program. General bird information as well as raptors will be discussed, narrowing down to hawks, falcons & owls. You will meet Aisling, the sanctuary’s resident Eurasian Eagle Owl and learn more about him. Meet at the Visitor’s Center.

2:00 pm Hotz Family History led by Steve Uglinica. Learn about the rich history of Ferdinand Hotz and his family. With Hotz owning most of the area now known as Newport State Park, his love of the land and foresight into conserving natural resources made it the place it is today. Meet at Europe Bay Town Park at the end of Europe Bay Road.

3:00 pm Insects of Newport Sate Park Join entomologist Dick Smythe and learn about the world of insects. Meet at the Visitor’s Center.

Rogue Theater presents the Golden Age of Comedy
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Rogue Theater brings back classic comedy sketches from the 50s, 60s and 70s.  Syd Caesar, Imogine Coca, Lucille Ball, Tim Conway, Harvey Corman, Carol Burnett, Pat Paulsen, Archie Campbell and so many other television comedy greats will come to life on stage at The Depot Performing Arts Center, 341 N. 3rd Ave. Sturgeon Bay.  August 21-24 and 29-31.  Show times are Thurs, Fri, Sat. at 7:30, Sun. 2:00.

“The Golden Age of Comedy” is entertainment for the entire family.  It’s your kids and grandkids opportunity to see some of the great comedy you were raised on. Ticket prices are family friendly too:  Just $15.00 for adults, $7.00 for students 6-18, and kids under 6 are free.

Rogue Theater’s artistic director Stuart Champeau selected the wide cross section of “skits” from a multitude of Comedy Variety Shows.  The cast includes: Champeau, Lola DeVillers, Dan Sallinen, Marcel Bruyere, Alex Sanchez, Michelle Reinhard, Skyler Champeau, Keri Grimsley, Maddy Parenteau, and Izzy Hitzman.  For tickets call 920-818-0816.

Hymn Sing
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Church music the way it used to be!  Come and request your favorite hymn and enjoy classics from across the centuries with others of all different denominations. Refreshments follow.

Zion Church Sing
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Zion United Methodist Church will hold an olde-fashion hymn sing at

6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31.  Begun in 1993 at the 139-year-old country

church, the activity features old-time hymns picked by the audience.

 The Rev. Don Heeringa, a former Zion pastor, will serve as song leader.

  The entire community is invited to attend.  Past hymn sings have

attracted as many as 146 people from 13 different religious

denominations.  All proceeds of the free-will offering will be donated

to DOOR CANcer.  Since 2002, Zion’s Hymn Sings have raised more than

$21,000 for local agencies that benefit the people of Door County

 Refreshments will be served.  Zion is located at 8781 County F, between

Baileys Harbor and Fish Creek.  The Rev. Jane Sommers is Zion’s pastor.
