Shoreline erosion from high water levels on Lake Michigan has been a bane for waterfront property across Door County and Whitefish Dunes State Park is no different. Given the draw the lakeshore property provides, the park is hit harder by erosion compared to others in the Door Peninsula. The sandy beaches and swells have been mostly inaccessible this year. Still, Interim Park Manager Erin Dembski says attendance has hung in there, roughly in line with 2018 for the summer months.
Water levels fell in August for Lake Michigan and are entering a period of seasonal decline which should alleviate some of the erosion problems for the park.
