Cyber attack takes down phone networks

You are not alone if you have found it difficult to place a phone call over the last week.  Phone providers throughout North America have fallen victim to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which tries to disrupt a normal connection by overwhelming the bandwidth needed to complete the call. Voice-over IP address phone providers like Zoom, Microsoft, and Ring Central and cell providers like Verizon Spectrum, and T-Mobile have all been affected. Quantum PC owner Nathan Drager first received calls on the issue last week when it affected the local 911 lines before it reached a crescendo on Saturday as it impacted many businesses.   Drager says it is up to the major telecom companies to implement the necessary improvements needed to fix the issue, so there is no timeline on when it will be all solved. He adds that redundancy is the way your home or business can mitigate the impact of a service outage like this.

TechRadar.com reports this is the second time a VoIP provider has been impacted by a DDoS attack in a month. Bandwidth.com, the VoIP phone provider impacted by the attack, says their teams are actively investigating the incident.
