After almost two years of waiting, Sturgeon Bay resident Anthony Gonzalez will learn his fate after being connected to the destruction of the former Butch’s Bar and 20 apartment units in February 2022. Gonzalez has been in jail on a $250,000 bond ever since he allegedly set the building on fire while refilling his lighter on his bed and tried lighting a cigarette in his apartment. Not only did the incident lead to the demolition of the building, but the fire killed two people and sent one person to Milwaukee to be treated for burns. In the nearly two years since, the trial has been delayed many times, most recently last August. Gonzalez faces multiple counts of second-degree reckless homicide, second-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of negligent handling of a burning material. The court case is scheduled for weekdays through February 2^nd at the Door County Circuit Court.
