A Sturgeon Bay man who was literally in the driver’s seat of history during World War II has passed away.
After joining the Army at 16, Earl Staats eventually spent three years as the personal driver of General George S. Patton in Germany.
In 1945, Staats was part of Patton’s funeral procession in Europe.
Back at home, Earl Staats had a 35-year career with the Door County Highway Department.
Earl Staats passed away Tuesday. He was 87.
