UPDATED Kewaunee County Accepts First Same-Sex Marriage License Application

UPDATED Noon Thursday

The first application by a same-sex couple for a marriage license in Kewaunee County was filed today. The two women were at the County Clerk’s office at around 10:00 this morning.

County Clerk Jamie Annoye said her office was ready to start taking applications as soon as they had word that the state was going to accept them.

Federal Court Judge Barbara Crabb will hold a hearing tomorrow afternoon to consider what should happen next. More than 500 same-sex couples statewide have applied for marriage licenses since last Friday.

UPDATED Thursday Morning

The interpretation of whether applications for marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Wisconsin can be issued continues to evolve.

As of late yesterday afternoon, Kewaunee County began accepting license applications, and for an additional $10 will waive the five-day waiting period before a wedding.

County Clerk Jamie Annoye said they were just waiting for some guidance.

Annoye said she had been contacted by three same-sex couples seeking applications.

In Door County, as of yesterday afternoon County Clerk Jill Lau said three applications had been received from same-sex couples – the first from two women, the other two from male couples. Door County is not waiving the five-day waiting period.

Federal Court Judge Barbara Crabb will hold a hearing tomorrow afternoon to consider what should happen next. More than 500 same-sex couples statewide have applied for marriage licenses since last Friday.

Original Story

While applications for marriage licenses from same sex couples have been accepted in Door County since Monday, they are not being accepted in Kewaunee County.

Kewaunee County Clerk Jamie Annoye says she is waiting for some kind of official direction.

Annoye says there are three same-sex couples who have contacted her office about marriage license applications, and she will call them as soon as she has the authorization to proceed.

In Door County, Clerk Jill Lau was given approval to accept applications by the county’s corporation counsel Monday. Two women were first couple to apply in Door County. Lau says two male couples have now also applied for marriage licenses.

Both Annoye and Lau say confusion would have been avoided if the state would have had guidelines ready for them when the ban on same-sex marriage was declared unconstitutional last Friday.
