Coast Guard Says Kayak Rescue Shows Why You Need A Plan And Communication Device

A 43-year-old Texas woman, her nine-year-old son and the boy’s cousin from Illinois were treated for what was described as mild hypothermia then released from a Marinette medical facility after their rescue following more than 15 hours in two kayaks on Green Bay.

Coast Guard Executive Petty Officer Stanley Rittner says this incident points out the need for you to make a plan and carry a communication device, even on what was intended to be an hour long paddle in the Bay.

The kayaks had drifted about 14 miles from Nicolet Bay into Michigan waters northeast of Chambers Island.

The Royal Canadian Air Force – whose C130 plane spotted the kayaks in the water about 6:05 this morning – has released photos of the rescue and the kayakers being checked at the airport in Menominee, MI.
