Nine-year-old Tommy Alter of Highland Park, Illinois, had the opportunity yesterday to thank the Coast Guard helicopter crew that helped rescue him, his cousin and his aunt from their kayaks on Lake Michigan earlier this month.
The three had planned to kayak for about an hour just off Peninsula State Park, but were carried away by two-foot waves and spent the night on the water before being rescued about 14 miles away from their original location on the Bay of Green Bay.
The incident has prompted reviews of how kayakers and others should be equipped to communicate with those on shore.
Alter met the crew at the Chicago Executive Airport yesterday. The crew is based at the Coast Guard station in Traverse City, Michigan.
