A $25,000 bid on a historic lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay has been placed in an online government auction. The federal government has declared the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal North Pierhead Lighthouse to be surplus property.
The auction started last Tuesday. The first and only bid so far was placed a week ago. The bidder’s identity is not listed. No end date has been set.
The lighthouse was built in 1903, is on the National Register of Historic Places and will continue to serve as a navigational aid maintained by the Coast Guard.
This is the second area lighthouse to be recently declared surplus. The Algoma Pierhead light was declared to be surplus in mid-May. The City of Algoma is hoping to obtain the deed to that property.
We’ve posted the link to the auction below.
