One issue where candidates for the first assembly district have diverse opinions is about who should re-draw legislative boundaries. The primary election will be held Tuesday. Four Republicans and one Democrat are hoping to succeed State Representative Garey Bies of Sister Bay who has represented the district for fourteen years.
Democrat Joe Majeski is the only one of the five candidates to endorse a proposal to adopt a non-partisan commission similar to Iowa. Majeski says voters should choose their legislators. Legislators should not choose their voters.
Republican Paul Feit does not have a position. Joel Kitchens, also a Republican, says a non-partisan commission is a noble idea but predicts if Democrats regain control of the legislature they would have nothing to do with reapportionment reform.
Republican Terry McNulty opposes reform and says it is not a partisan issue.
Complete responses from four of five candidates are posted at DoorCountyDailyNews.com.
Brian Hackbarth did not respond.
