A new state law will go into effect Thursday that prohibits teen drivers from talking on cell phones while behind the wheel.
The law will apply to anybody with a probationary license, which includes drivers under eighteen years old.
Sturgeon Bay Police Captain Dan Brinkman says it is a law that makes sense and should already be in place.
The texting ban affects all drivers in the state and began in late 2010.
Brinckman says that dialing a phone isn't much different than typing a text on one.
First time violators will be fined $20 to $40, with a $50 to $100 fine for a subsequent offense within a year of the first.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 11 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of their crash.
