A new program at Sunrise School in Sturgeon Bay has the goal of creating community "Ambassadors" focused on being respectful, safe, and responsible.
Sunrise special education teacher and acknowledgement committee for ambassadors member Gretchen Schmelzer says the program is a great way to associate school life and out of school life.
One student from each of thirteen classes are rewarded each month for showing those attributes—the Sunrise Way. Those students gain some special recognition for a month, which gets other students wondering what they can do to help their community.
At the end of the month the teachers choose one student in their classroom who has been a good example of the sunrise way.
The thirteen monthly ambassadors meet with the Door County Volunteer Center each month and are given three choices of opportunities to pick from to take part in to do even more good for their neighborhood.
Schmelzer says students also receive a leadership pin and are pictured on Sunrise Ambassadors posters throughout the school.
