Peninsula State Park Ties Cherokee Legend to Cardinal Ornament Program...
Families are welcome to attend The Legend of Red Bird, a storytelling
program that includes a holiday ornament craft, on Saturday, November 24,
from 11 - 11:45 AM at the Nature Center. Learn about the cardinal bird by
enjoying a Cherokee legend. Then, choose to create a variety of simple red
bird decorations.
Those wishing to "walk off" their turkey dinner are invited to join Park
Naturalist Kathleen Harris for a 1/2 mile hike near Weborg Shore,
identifying evergreen trees and enjoying tree folklore along the way. Meet
at Park Headquarters at 2 PM. The program will last about one hour. Rain?
We'll talk about trees inside Park Headquarters.
These programs are free and open to the public, but a state park vehicle
sticker is required. The Nature Center will be open Saturday, November 24,
from 10 AM to 1 PM and Sunday, November 25, from 1 - 3 PM. The 20th annual
muzzleloading hunt will be occuring in the park, but these programs take
place in areas of the Peninsula that are closed to hunting. Orange vests,
donated by Whitetails Unlimited, are available for free loan for those
visiting the park. Field guides and affordable children's items like owl
backpacks and hand lenses are available for sale at Peninsula and support
the park's nature education programs. If you need additional information,
