The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor is looking to enlist the help of area residents on a mission to monitor the bird population in Northern Door.
Centered around Ephraim, The Ridges will be hosting its annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 15. The count will focus on a 15 mile radius around Ephraim and is designed to assist the National Audubon Society in monitoring the population, migratory habits and other information related to our diverse avian population.
Karen Newbern, Naturalist at The Ridges explains the importance of this annual program…
All of the data compiled from across the country will be submitted to the National Audubon Society for collation into various reports designed to help track the patterns of birds over time.
Nothing is required other than your eyes and some time to spend either walking through areas recommended by The Ridges or even by watching your own bird feeders at home – with a good field guide – to identify birds. A pair of binoculars wouldn't hurt either. Newbern does urge all those interested in doing their own personal bird-counts to contact the Sanctuary for the appropriate monitoring paperwork.
Sturgeon Bay will be hosting a similar event the same day, with Southern Door County will be holding a count on December 16. For more information, contact The Ridges Sanctuary at (920)839-2802.
