Putting a little more 'Door County' into the Door County Fair.
UW-Extension Community Development Educator Rob Burke, leader of an ad hoc committee looking into ways to improve the fair, says that's one of the suggestions they've been hearing from people.
Burke says the 14-member committee has been meeting with community groups, 4-H clubs, food stand representatives and other stakeholders to gather input.
He says some of the other concerns revolved around the fee structure -- making it more user friendly for those who want to see only the exhibits, for example, or those who just attend the fair for part of the day. Many also expressed a desire to avoid scheduling the event at the same time as the Wisconsin State Fair.
Burke says one thing that has surprised him during the process is how strongly people feel about the Door County Fair.
Burke says the committee will meet again as a group January 17. He says the committee is expected to finish its work by March or April and then present its findings to the Door County Board.
The Door County Fair was first held in 1871 and has been held regularly since 1928.
