The U.S. Coast Guard will have a brand new pier at the Washington Island Station in Detroit Harbor in a few weeks. Senior Chief Wayne Spritka, Officer in Charge of the Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island Stations, says a new pier was necessary to accommodate the new response boat.
The projected completion date is January 22, 2013. Construction began at the end of October but Spritka says the preparations began last spring.
The next project on the docket for the Washington Island Station is a new roof for each of the two buildings. Spritka says they are in the design phase and hope to upgrade to steel roofing.
