Melody Walsh, Washington Island resident and amateur photographer, supplied the photo chosen for the cover of the December 2012 issue of the magazine Wisconsin Natural Resources.
Walsh remembers that when she took the photo, Jan. 24, 2009, "it was a very cold day with a windchill of -5 degrees. There were dark clouds to the east, but mostly sunny where we were on the east side of Rock Island State Park. I had snowmobiled over with Randy Holm, Erik Lucia and his wife, Cyndi."
Lucia is the president of the Friends of Rock Island.
In February 2010, Walsh submitted three of the photos she took that day to the Great Lakes photo contest. Then, more than two years later, in October 2012, she received an email informing her that one of her photos had been selected to be on the cover of the DNR magazine. She didn't know until she saw the issue that it was selected to promote the Great Lakes photo contest.
"This makes perfect sense," said Walsh, "because Erik is taking a photo in my photo!"
"We took many photos that day," said Walsh. "One of my blue-ice photos was selected for the 2010 Friends of Wisconsin State Park calendar for the month of January. A smaller version of Erik on the ice also appeared in that calendar. I submitted them on Feb. 5, 2009."
None of Walsh's photos was chosen as a winner of the Great Lakes photo contest that she had entered them in, but the contest rules say: "The Wisconsin DNR reserves the right to obtain an electronic or film copy of any image entered in the contest for noncommercial educational or promotional use with credit to the photographer."
That's how Walsh's photo was chosen for the cover of magazine.
Walsh used an Olympus Camedia C-4000 digital camera with only 4.0 megapixels. The setting was on automatic.
