Three athletic fields in Sturgeon Bay are sporting new lights after local entities teamed up to replace rickety old light poles from the 1950s.
Sturgeon Bay Utilities (SBU) deemed the light poles at Memorial Field, PBI Field and West Side Field unsafe to climb about a year ago and could no longer service the lights.
General Manager of SBU, Jim Stawicki, says the new lights are up and the contractor, Pieper Electric, Inc., is working on getting them hooked up.
SBU, the City of Sturgeon Bay, area recreational leagues and the School District of Sturgeon Bay along with its booster club researched the best way to replace the lighting, then pooled funds to foot the $475,000 bill with the help of some grant money. Stawicki is extremely proud of the way the groups collaborated to get done what they saw needed to be done.
Weather permitting, the lighting should be ready to use in March.
