Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, invisible gas that is generated from the natural breakdown of uranium in the ground. Door County Public Health Department Director and Health Officer Rhonda Kolberg says the gas seeps through cracks and openings in the foundations of homes and can cause lung cancer.
Kolberg encourages homeowners to educate themselves about radon and get a testing kit from a regional Radon Information Center.
Some of those fixes include sealing cracks in the foundation or basement floor of the home, replacing pipes and using fans to keep the radon from entering the house.
