A business in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park had to be evacuated Monday afternoon because of a fire.
The fire was at Northeast Wisconsin Industries at 905 S. Neenah Ave.
Sturgeon Bay Fire Chief Tim Herlache says no one was injured but everyone in the building had to be evacuated after a computerized cutting machine caught fire. Herlache says the machine -- which had a cardboard sleeve on it -- was being used to cut steel and "the build-up of cardboard and the heat from cutting started the cardboard dust on fire."
The chief says the fire was contained to the machine and ductwork and caused "considerable damage" to the machine.
He says that particular machine isn't normally used for that type of cutting but was pressed into action because NEW Industries is backlogged with work.
Herlache says workers at the plant were able to knock down the fire with dry chemical extinguishers and fire crews finished the job.
The fire was reported at 2:18 p.m. Herlache says the fire department cleared the scene at 3:15 p.m.
