Sturgeon Bay's Bayview Bridge is still scheduled to close to traffic on Monday but the Department of Transportation Northeast region office announced Friday that the bridge will remain open to snowmobiles through Sunday, March 10.
The bridge's sidewalk is the only official snowmobile trail linking trails in the northern part of Door County with trails in the south.
The snowmobile question was brought up during a special meeting of the Sturgeon Bay City Council Thursday.
The span is scheduled to close Monday and remain closed to traffic and pedestrians for four months. Traffic will be detoured through the city.
Alderman Bob Schlicht asked the DOT's Kim Rudat if the state was prepared to compensate the city for wear and tear to roads subjected to extra traffic because of the detour. Rudat said he would check and report back to the city.
WisDOT Project Manager Paul Zoellner also revealed a second project the state had previously scheduled to coincide with the work on the bridge has now been moved to 2014.
In other action, aldermen voted unanimously to restrict parking on South Neenah Avenue during the closure.
City Administrator Steve McNeil also told the Council that Police Chief Arleigh Porter had secured about $78,000 in state funding to help with traffic control during the project.
More information about the project can be found here.
