Wonderful, beautiful, great and well-organized are a few words that Walter “Wally” Hanish of Sturgeon Bay used to describe his Honor Flight.
The 91-year-old World War II Army veteran got his chance to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. in October, 2011.
Hanish served as a medic and in an anti-aircraft battalion from 1942-1945; he spent 32 months in Europe and Africa. His trip to Washington D.C. only lasted one day, but he says he’ll never forget the experience. Not only did the organizers wheel him around to see the memorials, they did some work before the trip to notify Hanish’s friends and family members that he’d be spending a few hours on a plane that October day.
Hanish and his wife Betty are looking forward to seeing “Honor Flight: One Last Mission” on Sunday at the Sturgeon Bay Cinema. If you’d like to see what Hanish experienced, tickets are available at the cinema for $5 and showings are at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. this Sunday only.
