Seventeen years ago, parks in Kewaunee County had few recreational trails. A few mountain biking enthusiasts from Door and Kewaunee Counties took it upon themselves and partnered with the Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Department and its director, Matt Payette, to change that.
That group called themselves the NEW KRANKS – the Northeast Wisconsin Kewaunee River Area Network of Killer Single-track. They have built and maintain about eleven miles of single-track trails in Winter Park, Riverview Park and Ryan Park and plan to add about seven more miles among the parks over the next 2-3 years. NEW KRANKS President, Chris Daming says the all-volunteer group puts in a lot of work surveying the land, marking the trails and then building them.
The NEW KRANKS have hosted biking events in the past to raise money, but other than that the organization relies mostly on volunteers and in-kind donations. Daming says the group is always looking for more members with a passion for mountain biking.
