Guest Report - Spring Cleaning the Green Way

According to the calendar, spring has sprung! However, Mother Nature has a mind of her own and we may need to wait a few weeks to let the outside temperatures catch up. While you’re waiting, put spring into motion inside by getting started with some spring cleaning! Commercial cleaning agents can be loaded with chemicals that are both harmful to our health and our environment. This spring, try some of these basic supplies to create "green" cleaners that will get the job done:

  • Glass cleaner:  mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quart water and pour into a spray bottle.  Use on windows and mirrors and wipe down with a lint free cloth or use old newspaper to get a streak free shine.
  • Counter top and bathroom cleaner:  Use a 2-4-1 mix of vinegar, water and baking soda.  Apply with a sponge or small brush and wipe clean.
  • Mold and mildew:  wipe away with straight vinegar.
  • Toilet bowls:  sprinkle with baking soda and scrub away!  It is safe for septic systems and won't pollute the water supply.

Vinegar is environmentally friendly and is acid based, which makes it effective in fighting molds, grease and bacteria. It can be purchased at any local grocery store and is inexpensive compared to other commercial cleaners. Baking soda also cleans as a natural abrasive to help remove stains and grime. It's also safe enough to use for toothpaste.

Spring into action and get started with some "green cleaning". It will be safer for your health and the environment.
