Since mid-February a group of English language learners has been meeting at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay with their teacher, Renee Honold-Smith, every week. Reverend Richard Feyen says the group is predominantly Spanish-speaking, but overall the students come from diverse backgrounds.
Honold-Smith was scheduled to teach their class through NWTC starting in January, but the class was cancelled. Fortunately for the students, many of them had already been meeting one-on-one with a group of conversation partners from the church. Feyen says he had no qualms in offering to host the class at the church when he heard about the NWTC cancellation.
Honold-Smith is volunteering her time for now and working to secure grants in order to continue offering the class. Feyen says as long as they see a need, he and Honold-Smith will do their best to meet it.
Classes are open to anyone wishing to join, the group meets Thursdays from 5-8 p.m.
