Volunteer Center Announces Golden Heart Honorees

Tickets are now available for the 11th annual Golden Heart Volunteer Celebration to be held Thursday evening, April 25 at Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay. The event honors outstanding volunteers in the community, recognizes the importance of the organizations through which they work and supports the Volunteer Center's programming.

Nominations are reviewed by an independent panel of judges representing different areas in our community.  Twenty-one nominations were received for this year's event and include adult honorees:  Sara Baudhuin, Dick Clark, Susan Johnson, Liz Junion, Barb Maskell, Myrna Peil, Sharon Sternard and Mary Beth Volmer.  Group honorees are Lois Rice, Lucille Sohns & Pat Loomis (90+ Volunteer Group of Bargains Unlimited), Lakeshore CAP Food Pantry Volunteers, Michael Brecke, Paula Hedeen, Judy Bush & Delmar Dahl (Scandia Village Capital Campaign Leadership Team) and Sturgeon Bay High School Project 180/AODA Student Group.  Arts & Culture honorees are Birch Creek Associates, Jon & Leslie Gast (Door County Auditorium & Door County Maritime Museum), Dennis & Eileen Mayborne (American Folklore Theatre) and the Southern Door 5th Grade Class for their work with the Cerebral Palsy Telethon.  The Lifetime of Service honorees are Michael Brecke, Sandy Brown, Dorleen Buschmann, Bob Jaeschke and Dave Pape.

Three high school seniors have been selected to receive the Golden Heart Youth Scholarship Awards.  They are Samantha Paider (Southern Door), Ali Sommerfeldt (Sturgeon Bay) and Sarah Waldron (Washington Island).  Each youth recipient will receive a $500 academic scholarship.

During the celebration, each honoree will be individually recognized and presented with a nomination gift designed by Tara Nikko Rossman.  The five award recipients will receive a custom designed art piece by Plum Bottom Pottery plus $500 to designate to a Door County charity of their choice.

Casey and Nicole Rabach are this year's keynote speakers and will address their charity work during Casey's 10 year career in the NFL and why they've chosen to return to Door County to begin the "5th Quarter" of their lives.  Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer, philanthropist and women's health advocate, will be returning as Master of Ceremonies.

Tickets for the event are $35 each and available only in advance through the Volunteer Center at (920)746-7704.
