A computer-related scam that prompted a warning by Sturgeon Bay police last month (Sturgeon Bay Police Caution Residents About Phone Scam, 3/6/13) is now making the rounds in Algoma.
Ed Duerst, owner of EZ Computers in Algoma tells DoorCountyDailyNews.com he's fielded five calls in the last three days from customers who say they've received phone calls from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, telling them they have something wrong with their computer.
Duerst says he's advising those who did provide credit card information to contact their credit card company to request a stop payment. He says a "system restore" should take care of any changes that may have been made to the computer.
Duerst says it's always better to be safe than sorry.
"If you get a call from somebody you don't know, don't trust them with your computer because your personal information is on it," says Duerst. "If you get a call like that and you think maybe it's possible (that it's legitimate), contact some computer business that you work with that you trust."
