By Gay Pustaver, director at FISC Consumer Credit Counseling Services in Sturgeon Bay
FISC is a member of the non-profit professional organization, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). According to a recent Financial Literacy Survey conducted by the NFCC, there are many misconceptions about credit counseling agencies causing confusion and preventing people from getting the help they need soon enough.
For example, survey respondents did not know which agency to turn to for assistance. It’s always smart to be cautious when dealing with financial matters, but not to let confusion keep you from getting legitimate assistance. Look for an agency associated with the NFCC, then check the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no unresolved complaints against the agency. FISC is a good place to start -- we are local, serve Door and Kewaunee counties and can give you contact information for NFCC agencies all over the country.
Also, many people thought credit counseling cost too much. The truth is, many services offered by FISC are free or at a nominal one-time cost. Our office offers free half-hour introductory sessions for people who want to just come in and see what we are about before completing paperwork.
FISC is accredited, our counselors are certified and we adhere to the NFCC’s strict Member Quality Standards. All this means, you can trust us. Our clients feel so comfortable with our confidential services, they tell their friends and family about us! When you are experiencing ANY kind of financial difficulty, the best plan is to promptly contact FISC at (920) 743-1862.
