After years of research and fundraising, the Jacksonport Fire Department is introducing its newest addition – a 2012 SEALEGS amphibious rescue boat.
The 20-foot boat is a rigid hull inflatable powered by a 115 horse power Evinrude outboard motor with room for 6-8 people. While on land, the boat can travel for 20 minutes at a speed of seven miles per hour. Rescue crews will have access to GPS charts, sonar and radar onboard.
In the past, the department could only use boats small enough to be carried into the water because there is no suitable boat launch facility. Now, crews can just drive into the water from any shoreline.
