Apart from starting a family and a summer music tour of the U.S., the most influential experience in my life was 6 months that I spent living with a host family in Costa Rica going to La Universidad de Heredia. It was my first experience away from Chicagoland and my parents. I learned how to dance Bachata, the wonder of a rainforest, the importance of a good raincoat in the rainy season, and how to live on relaxed Tico Time. None of this would have been possible without Margie, Charlene and Daniela - my host family. They were patient with my broken Spanish and taught me the wonders of Central America.
The Rotary Club of Door County North is seeking three families to host a high school exchange student between August 2013 and May 2014 so that a teenager from another country may have a similar experience to mine. Rotary asks each Door County family to provide room and board for about three months. "Pocket money" for activities, rides, entertainment and support will be provided by Rotary.
For more information about Rotary's exchange program please call Mary Horton at 920-421-4871.
