Starting Monday, local law enforcement agencies will be joining those from around the state in cracking down on drivers and passengers who don't wear their seat belts.
The annual Click It or Ticket mobilization runs through June 2. The 405 law enforcement agencies participating in this year’s effort is a record high for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin State Patrol Major Sandra Huxtable, director of the Bureau of Transportation Safety, says approximately one out of five Wisconsin motorists does not buckle up. The 80 percent usage rate lags behind the national average of 86 percent and that of neighboring states -- all of which have safety belt uses higher than 90 percent.
Last year in Wisconsin Huxtable says there were nearly 105,000 convictions for failure to fasten seat belts. Among all traffic violations in Wisconsin, safety belt convictions were second only to speeding convictions.
