The Northern Door Neighbors Association (NDNA) is working to designate rural roads in the Town of Liberty Grove as Heritage Roads to preserve and protect their character.
Jim and Carole Maronek, long-time members of the NDNA and Liberty Grove residents, say Heritage Roads require less “improvements” than the standard roads.
Garrett Bay Road stretches along Garret Bay at the northern tip of Door peninsula. The rustic road is scheduled for reconstruction, but standard road improvements would require the addition of more shoulder space and removal of the trees that make it so scenic.
The town has already designated six roads as Heritage Roads but hasn’t yet acted on Garrett Bay Road, which has been nominated. Carole says the town board at one point resolved that roads scheduled for reconstruction would not eligible to be designated as Heritage Roads, however that resolution has been reversed. With Garrett Bay Road up for reconstruction, Carole can’t help but struggle with the irony of the situation.
The couple describes Garrett Bay Road as the “poster child” of Door County’s rural roads. The NDNA is hopeful that the town will hold a meeting in early June to specifically discuss the fate of Garrett Bay Road.
