The jury from Wood County found Brian Cooper guilty on one count of third degree sexual assault just before 1 p.m. Saturday. The jury was hung on both of the first degree intentional homicide charges.
The 36-year-old Illinois native is charged in the death of 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield and her unborn child last August at a Town of Nasewaupee resort.
Immediately after reading the verdict, Judge Todd Ehlers thanked and dismissed the jury. Earlier in the day, two jury members were dissenting and the presiding juror reported the panel was in a deadlock.
To close out the session, Ehlers suggested new trial dates in mid-October to try again in reaching a verdict on the first degree intentional homicide charges.
Members of Bromfield's family quickly filed out of the courtroom in disbelief.
