Bernice Hawkins, 86 years of Sturgeon Bay, died Wednesday December 18, 2013 at the Skilled Nursing Center at Ministry-Door County Medical Center.
She was born Bernice Alberta Pluff on November 29, 1927 in Ephraim, the daughter of the late Isadore Pluff and Lorena Marie Johanna Staver. As a young woman Bea left Door County to find as a housekeeper with a family in Illinois. On May 3, 1946 she married Frederick Eugene “Gene” Hawkins, who was stationed on Plumb Island with the U.S. Coast Guard. That’s when she left Door County. They lived in Tennessee near his folks while Gene worked at the Aluminum Plant. In 1951 they moved to Texas and Gene worked in the oil fields, and Bernice drove Dozer in the fields. She also taught aerobics. Bea loved working out for her health. The raised their two children in Texas where they lived until they returned to Door County in 2004. He preceded her in death in 2011 at King Veteran Home.
Survivors include her two children, Stephen “Steve” (Shelly) Hawkins of Houston, TX, Deborah Clark of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harry Pluff of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ken (Sandy) Pluff of the UP in Michigan, Darrell (Pat) Pluff of Aiken, S.C.; two sisters, Jeanette of Milwaukee, and Patsy Scruggs of Arkansas.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and four siblings, Gusty, Margaret, Raymond and Arthur. Interment will be made at Center Cemetery in Tennessee.
