Margaret Winthrop McEwan Hansen, 89, of Sturgeon Bay, died Monday, November 25, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.
She was born to the late Margaret Peck and Thomas S. McEwan on May 6, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. Margaret matriculated at New Trier High School and received her BA from Bryn Mawr College in 1946. Peggy married the late Rev. Dr. Robert Emil Hansen in 1947. Peggy was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio where her husband was the founding minister. They retired in 1979 to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, with a winter home in Houston, Texas.
She was interested in poverty issues putting in long hours at a thrift shop in Toledo and later at a learning center for immigrants in Houston. She was entranced by the arts. Peggy studied art history, painting, sculpture; traveled widely and especially enjoyed learning about local handicrafts. Her interests were broad, from opera to creative gardening.
Certainly Peggy's passion was her family for whom she was always the rock of support. She is survived by her six children: Alexander and David, of Pasadena, CA; Rebecca, of Ithaca, NY; Jonathan, of Toledo; Laurie Saxton, of San Rafael, CA; and Douglas, of Rock Hill, SC; as well as four daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, fifteen grandchildren, and four great-granddaughters.
Burial will take place in July of 2014 at Bayside Cemetery.
