Genevieve Anne “Gene” Woods

Genevieve Anne Woods, nee Shunick, 92, of Sturgeon Bay, formerly of Del Mar and Los Angeles, CA, was called to eternal life with the Lord on Monday, August 11, 2014, while at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, following a brief illness.

Gene was born July 13, 1922, in Galesburg, IL to the late David H. and Kathryn G. (Flanagan) Shunick. She was the youngest of 11 children, growing up on the family farm in Alexis, IL. In her early life, she was employed in administrative roles at the Rock Island, IL Military Arsenal, and with the U.S. Government War Department in Washington, D.C. during WWII. In 1949, Gene was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad as a Stewardess, serving passengers on its “City of Los Angeles” Streamliner trains between Los Angeles and Chicago. She later worked for the Southern California Gas Company in Los Angeles. On June 20, 1957, she was united in marriage to William Thompson Woods, originally of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, in Los Angeles, CA at St. Gregory Nazianzen Catholic Church. They were married 42 years, until he preceded her in death on October 29, 1999. After residing in Los Angeles and Del Mar, CA for more than 50 years, Gene relocated to Door County along with her son and family. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay since 2008.

Her loving presence will live on in the hearts of her son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Marianne (Camenzind) Woods of Egg Harbor; four grandchildren: Justin and fiancé Jaime Sague (Chicago, IL), Ann-Marie (Boston, MA), Mackenzie, and Riley Woods (both of Egg Harbor, WI); dear sister-in-law Martha Shunick (Alexis, IL), brother-in-law and sister-in-law Frederick (Jacqueline) Woods (Oshawa, Ontario); sister-in-law Doreen Woods (Arden, Ontario); numerous nieces and nephews; and many treasured friends.

Gene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 10 elder siblings (and their respective spouses): Aileen J. (Thomas) Morris, Katherine D. Shunick, Mary Edna Shunick, Frances A. (Claude) Sherwood, Helen B. Shunick, John D. (Ruth) Shunick, Theresa G. (Robert) Vaughan, James L. (Doris) Shunick, Leone M. (Frederick) Colford, and Lawrence B. (Bette) Shunick.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2014, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay with Fr. Carl Schmitt as celebrant. Interment will be in Our Lady of Sorrows Mausoleum at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana.

Friends may call at the church on Monday morning, August 18, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Memorials may be given in Genevieve’s name to St. John Bosco Catholic School (15 N. Elgin Ave., Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235).

The Woods family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Pine Crest Village, especially to Chris Parent, RN, for their kind and compassionate care shown to Gene during her time in residence.
