Jean Gallaher Setterholm, 85, of Sturgeon Bay died peacefully on September 5, 2012 with family at her side.
Born June 4, 1927 in Appleton to Winifred (Stuart) and William Gallaher, Jean was the oldest of four children. Jean attended the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin Law School. She earned a law degree and was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar in 1954, making her one of the few women attorneys at the time. Jean worked in Madison for the League of Wisconsin Municipalities where she was the attorney for several Dane County municipalities as well as special counsel to numerous cities, towns and villages. While with the League she also gave lectures on local government law to classes at the UW Law School and the State Bar of Wisconsin. Jean later became a partner with the law firm of DeWitt Ross and Stevens where she practiced business and real estate law. Jean met her future husband, Vance Setterholm, at the UW Library and they were married in September 1954. Vance had a long and distinguished career at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison. After retirement Jean and Vance moved from the Madison area to Sturgeon Bay.
Over the years Jean was active in several service organizations including Altrusa and the League of Women Voters and worked with a number of charitable organizations serving lower income individuals, the elderly and the environment. She loved to travel, was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to jazz and classical music.
Jean is survived by her daughters Kirsten of Berkeley, CA, Ditte of Golden Valley, MN and Andrea of San Francisco, CA; her sister Charlotte Prohaska of Overland Park, KS and her brother Alan Gallaher of Edina, MN. Preceding her in death were her husband Vance and her brother Stuart Gallaher of Madison.
