June Doris Peterson, 90, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away Monday, August 27, 2012, at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care in Sturgeon Bay.
She was born June 10, 1922, in Oconto, WI, the daughter of the late Anton and Emelia (Riemer) Beekman. June graduated from Oconto High School in 1940 and continued her education at Milwaukee County Nursing School for three years. She worked for 40 years as a surgical RN and managed the OR at Door County Memorial Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
June was united in marriage to M. “George” Peterson on October 12, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Sturgeon Bay. George preceded her in death on December 10, 1979.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and always helped with the local Thanksgiving dinner along with numerous committees through the year. June was a community-minded person as she was also a member of Bayside Cemetery Association, Order of the Eastern Star HONOR #1 in Sturgeon Bay, Peninsula Chamber Singers, Choraliers, and the Community Concert Board. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and community concerts. June loved her Wisconsin sports teams; she was an avid Packer, Brewer, and Badger fan.
June will be missed by her son, Thomas (Mary) Peterson of Rhinelander, WI; three grandchildren, Scott (Tracy Ann) Peterson (and their son, Levi) of St. Louis Park, MN, Lucas (Tracy Lyn) Peterson (and their children Alexis, Drew and Lincoln) of Frederick, MD, Michael (Jennifer) (and their children Maren and Maddie); numerous nieces, nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, M. “George”; four sisters, Florence Beekman, Margaret Wulf, Francis “Donnie” Gallagher, and Jane Reed, her twin sister.
There will be a memorial service held at United Methodist Church in Sturgeon Bay on October 12 at 11:00 a.m. with Eastern Star Service at 11:45 a.m.
