Raymond J. Hamm, 72, of Egg Harbor, passed away Sunday morning, September 9, 2012, at Ministry Door County Medical Center.
He was born October 8, 1939 in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of the late James “Jim” and Lois (Gerstung) Hamm. He graduated with the class of 1958 at Grant High School in Fox Lake, Illinois where he was quarterback of the football team, and fought in 1957 and 1958 in the Golden Gloves Boxing tournament in Rockford. Ray served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. On July 31, 1961 Ray married his high school sweetheart, "Laurie" Loretta E. Pinkham in Illinois. In 1974 they moved from Ingleside, Illinois to Egg Harbor where they bought and then operated Camp-Tel Family Campground for 19 years. He worked for Harbor Construction for many years and was an experienced heavy equipment operator. Laurie preceded him in death on February 9, 2006.
For many years there was never a dull moment, memories were made and as a result…many “stories” have been told over the years. Ray played 16” no glove softball, an Illinois phenomenon, and was on a tournament traveling team before moving to Door County. He then played 12” softball for Egg Harbor and enjoyed many good times with his teammates. As a bowler he traveled to the Sister Bay Bowl for league night and enjoyed competing in the ABC Tournaments. Ray was an avid bird hunter and enjoyed trying to teach his grandsons how to make the perfect duck call. He traveled to his cousin Ronny’s in Southern Illinois and to North Dakota to hunt with family and friends…..he also enjoyed his years of trap league at the Peninsula Gun Club. Ray fished in Door County and in the Florida Keys with many tales from the trips to Dry Tortugas. It was very important to spend time with his grandsons, Ryan and Mitchell sharing his love of fishing with them around Door County.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Robin (Jack) Hamm-Jackson of Sturgeon Bay; grandsons, Ryan and Mitchell; twin brother, Robert (Donna) Hamm of Fox Lake, Illinois; and other family members and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Laurie; brother, Richard “Butch” Hamm; and nephew, Scott Hamm.
A time to Celebrate Ray’s life will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at The Orchards Golf Course in Egg Harbor from 12:00 to 3 p.m. with remarks by Rev. Michael Brecke at 1:00 p.m. followed by military honors.
Memorials may be made in his memory.
