Clyde 'Sonny' L. Estes

Clyde “Sonny” L. Estes, 71 years, of Sturgeon Bay, was called home to Heaven and greeted by his son, Jeff on Wednesday morning (January 2, 2013) at Ministry-Door County Medical Center.

He was born December 28, 1941 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Harold and Elsie (Miller) Estes. Sonny graduated from Luther South High School on the South side of Chicago in 1960. After finishing his four year plumbing apprenticeship he worked for Great Lakes Plumbing in Chicago before his 25 years at McCormick Place, then spent his later years at Aspen Plumbing in Carol Steam, IL, until his retirement.  He was a faithful member of Local Plumbers Union #130 in Chicago.

On November 14, 1964 he married Janet J. Thorp at Harvard Congregational Church in Oak Park, IL. Sonny met Janet, the love of his life, on a blind date and they were married within four months. They moved their family to Door County in 1986 when they bought Plum Bottom Gas Station which they operated until 1995.

Sonny was a kind hearted man devoted to his family. Taking care of the wild animals in his yard and the cats at the recycling center was a devotion of his. Sonny loved playing matchmaker. His greatest pleasure was watching his grandchildren play on the beach.

Following his retirement, Sonny was a constant driving force and inspiration for his sons' business ventures. Some would say he was a workaholic, but this is how Sonny always was, from the young boy working a paper route with help from his grandma to helping toward the success of his sons' businesses.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; four children, Steve (Tammy) (their children, Madeline, Grant and Andre), Jason (Laura) (their children, Anna, Will, Elise), Keith (Dawn) (their children, Austin and Tim), Michelle Estes, all of Sturgeon Bay; sister-in-law, Susan (Marv) Abraham of Menomonee Falls; niece, Allison (Tom) Walker; two nephews, J.T. (Annette) Abraham, Michael (Carmen) Abraham.

Preceding him in death were his parents and son, Jeff in 1985.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (January 6, 2013) at Huehns Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Groth officiating.

Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory for the Door County Humane Society.
