Evelyn A. Bonin, 93, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, and formerly of Duluth, MN, passed away Monday morning, March 11, 2013, at Golden Living Center-Dorchester with family by her side.
She was born July 31, 1919, to Victor and Sophia Fagerberg in Duluth, MN. Evelyn graduated from Denfield West High School in Duluth in 1937 and went on study business for the next two years. She worked as an executive secretary throughout her life for various companies. Upon her graduation from business school, Evelyn worked for a hardware distributing company in Duluth. In the summer of 1943, she was united into marriage to Clarence Bonin, Sr., at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Chicago, IL. Together, they owned and operated their own record and radio store. Later, Evelyn worked for Vapor Heating in Niles, IL, and then for Standard Rate and Data Service in Skokie, IL. After retiring at age 80, she moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI, to be closer to family.
Although Evelyn was an executive secretary for over half of her life, she was extremely proud of her work and involvement with the churches she had been a part of throughout her life. At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenview, IL, she enjoyed being a part of the choir and serving on the church board and also as church historian. Evelyn became especially fond of Hainesville Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay over the years when she would come up to visit family. After relocating to Sturgeon Bay in 2000, she became an active member of Hainesville Lutheran Church, where she served as church secretary for many years and helped put together the newsletter.
Evelyn liked solving crossword puzzles and playing card games. At Big Hill Regency House in Sturgeon Bay, where she was the first tenant, she enjoyed writing.
Evelyn will be deeply missed by her son, Clarence “Clay” (Merrilyn) Bonin, Jr., of Sturgeon Bay, WI; daughter, Dorothy (Lonnie) Boyd of Linn Valley, KS; grandchildren, Kenneth Boyd, Patience Boyd, Merrilyn (Martin) Schobe, Sarah (Randal) Bradshaw, and Margaret (Mike) Wand; great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Elijah, Ethan, Demaris, Phoebe, Silas, Athena, and Catherine (Steve) (and their children, Hope, Brendon, Joshua, and Timothy), Laura, and Andrew; special nephew, Al Sedeen of OH, who visited her every year on her birthday; nieces; nephews; and other friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence, Sr.; daughter, Sylvia Baptist; sister, Lorraine (Kenneth) Bresin; and nephew, Kenneth “Skip” Bresin.
A memorial service will be held in April at Hainesville Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay with Rev. Mike Zolnosky officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Door County Humane Society or the Door County Maritime Museum.
