Darrell I. von Berg

Darrell Ivan von Berg, 88, of Sturgeon Bay, fell asleep in the loving arms of his daughters at home and awoke in the arms of the Lord, Thursday night, August 1, 2019. Loving husband of the late Marlene (Kietzmann) von Berg and forever cherished father of Tammy (Dann) O’Connell of Muskego and Jane Kohl of Pewaukee. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister Beverly and (George) Kehlenbrink and brother Daniel Von Berg. He will be remembered by special friend Virgil Doell; sister-in-law Carola Von Berg and other relatives and friends.

     He was born June 4, 1931 in Milwaukee, to Ivan Benjamin von Berg and Rosabel Marie (Forster) von Berg. He graduated from West Allis Central High School in 1949 and achieved a BS in Geography from UW-Milwaukee. He joined the Air Force during the Korean War. Darrell married the love of his life Marlene Ann Kietzmann on March 2, 1953 at Holy Ghost Church in Milwaukee.

     Darrell worked for Briggs & Stratton in Milwaukee for 27 years. He formerly lived in New Berlin and later in life they built a log home on Glidden Drive in Door County. His beloved Marlene passed away June 7, 2001 after 48 years of marriage. Darrell shared wonderful moments with special friend, Virgil Doell.

     While in Door County, Darrell was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, a 4th degree Knight of Columbus with the Msgr. Broens Council #2478, volunteered at the local Historical Society, Maritime Museum and Humane Society. Both he and Marlene were members of the Civil Air Patrol. Darrell loved flying and became a glider pilot. He also designed and built their 3 homes. He was a lifelong learner and man of many talents and especially enjoyed; woodworking, traveling, inventing and bowling.

     Darrell's life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 811 W. Juniper St., Sturgeon Bay with Fr. Ryan Krueger as celebrating and Dcn. Mark Hibbs assisting. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Huehns Funeral Home, 1414 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay, on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of closing prayers at 2:30 p.m., followed by the procession to church. The Rosary will be prayed at the funeral home at 12:45 p.m. and led by the Knights of Columbus.

     Services will also be held in Waukesha on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Prairie Home Cemetery Chapel, 605 S. Prairie Ave., with Pastor Greg Van Dunk, of Atonement Lutheran Church in Muskego, officiating. Visitation will be held at the cemetery chapel on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Committal with military honors by the United States Air Force and the American Legion D. J. Martin Post #8 will follow at the cemetery mausoleum where Darrell will be laid to rest.

     Memorials may be given in Darrell's name to the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) - Annie's Fund or the Wisconsin Humane Society - Door County Campus.
