Dear Editor,
Politics has never been a place for the faint of heart, but since I left office a year ago, it has become an increasingly rough and tumble world in Wisconsin. The pull toward polarization and legislators toeing a rigid party line results in either paralysis or a stream of endless special interest legislation that only adds to the burden of ordinary citizens.
As a voter in the 1st Assembly District, I will enthusiastically cast my vote for Patrick Veeser. This man has lived in the district his entire life. He is a bright, thoughtful, clear-headed independent thinker who will act in our best interests when elected.
For example, Patrick knows the deep value of a strong system of public schools to educate our citizenry and bolster a resilient regional economy. He would never vote, as Gary Bies did, to siphon money off the public schools budget for private schools in other cities across the state. He is committed to solid local schools.
Patrick wouldn't follow Gary Bies's vote to make our seniors more vulnerable by supporting a rollback of the Homestead Tax Credit and a budget proposal that would have severely undermined SeniorCare. It has been the pride of Wisconsin public policy to offer this superior alternative to Medicare Part D.
Join me in changing the course of discourse in our state capitol: vote for Patrick Veeser on November 6th.
Truly yours,
Barbara Lawton, Algoma
WI Lt. Governor 2003-11
