Rough night for Green Bay women's basketball, volleyball

By Tim Kowols

Faced with tough opponents on the road, both the Green Bay women’s basketball and volleyball teams lost in their Thursday night action.

In Madison, the Phoenix volleyball team lost in straight sets to nationally sixth-seeded Wisconsin, 25-9, 27-25, and 25-15. Alexandra Zakutney led the Phoenix with 13 kills while Ashley Sledge chipped in four blocks. The Phoenix ultimately could not overcome its 26 errors in the program’s first NCAA appearance since 2003.

In Brookings, South Dakota the Phoenix women’s basketball team could dig itself out of 34-12 1st half deficit en route to a 77-47 loss to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Laken James and Lyndsey Robson led the Phoenix with the 11 points apiece, but could not overcome a Jackrabbits defense that held them to less than 30 percent shooting from the field. The Phoenix continue their South Dakota road trip against the state’s flagship university on Saturday.
