Another tournament equaled another championship for Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Jeremy Jorns as he captured the Willard Schmidt Scramble title at Green Bay Preble during a busy weekend of area wrestling.
In Green Bay, Jorns led another shorthanded Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol squad to a 12th place finish with his championship at 182 pounds. Nick West wrestled very well while placing 3rd at 285 pounds and Peyton Hurth was 4th at 138 pounds. Luxemburg-Casco sent their junior varsity team to the tournament, placing 10th overall. Ty Paider (106 pounds) led the way for the Spartans with a 4th place finish.
The Spartans' varsity ventured west to Rochester for their weekend at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament. Bryce Bosman and Nathan Ronsman each took second place at their respective weights while Reece Worachek and Lucas Joniaux also placed in the 40-team tournament. The Spartans as a team took 14th overall.
In Kewaunee, the host Storm finished in 3rd place while Southern Door took 6th in the nine-team tournament. The Storm's Jack Severin, Travis Reinke, and Dylan Steinhorst all took top honors in their weight classes while seven others made the championship semifinals.
Southern Door head coach Jerry Englebert gives us this thoughts on his Southern Door wrestlers: As a team we looked much better than last week. Still a young team and making plenty of mistakes but we were staying in better position and using more technique. In practice this week we went back to basics with more live wrestling. This was a good tournament for us to build from. We were able to take good notes today on each wrestler along with video to work with in practice. Todays Top finishers were: Grant Englebert 2nd at 152. Grant looked very solid in his early matches dominating the competition with . In the finals he had the #9 ranked Moravec from Waubeno/Laona. Unfortunately he got a little banged up in the finals but he will be ready to go again next week. Austin Farley 3rd at 106. Austin typically gives up about 20 lbs weighing in at 85 lbs but his technique is getting better giving him opportunities to use some offense. Austin has improved greatly from the beginning of the season. Austin Falish 3rd at 113. Austin is in his second year of high school wrestling but like Austin Farley he was well under 106 and didn’t get many varsity opportunities last season. Austin is a very hard worker in the weight room and the wrestling room. Its great to see his hard work is finally paying off. In todays first three matches he used a nice variety of techniques including some he hasn’t tried before.
