County rivals battle in conference wrestling tilt

Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol meet for county bragging rights Thursday evening in their Packerland Conference wrestling tilt. It marks the first conference match of the season for Southern Door while Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol looks to rebound after a 71-6 loss to Kewaunee last week.

Southern Door is coming off a weekend tournament at Cedar Grove-Belgium and matchups against Gillett and Crivitz earlier this week. Drew Price took first place at the Rocket Scramble at 145 pounds, while Griffin Slezewski took second at 132. Austin Falish (113 lbs) and Grant Englebert (152) also finished in the top six. Southern Door took 12th in the 18-team tournament.

Wrestling in the same gym on Tuesday was Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, days after competing in a tournament in Manawa. Jeremy Jorns was first at 182 going 5-0 with 4 pins and a 11-2 win. Placing second were Peyton Hurth at 132 going 4-1 and Nick West at 285 going 3-1. Placing 4th was Ben Denamur at 126 and David Condra going 3-2. Trevor Wilke was also 3-2 and placed 5th. Sam Able went 114 and placed 8th.

Tim Kowols and Greg Letter will have the action beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the first whistle at 7 p.m. on 104.1 WRLU and streaming worldwide at DoorCountyDailyNews.com.  Kewaunee will wrestle Peshtigo in the conference's other Thursday dual as Oconto has the week off.
